The organizers of the 1 in 5 Million protest devoted this Saturday’s gathering to the assassinated Kosovo Serb opposition leader Oliver Ivanovic, playing recordings of his interviews instead of the customary speeches.

The protest march, headed by protesters carrying a banner saying There Are More Of Us, ended up in front of the St Sava temple where protesters lit candles in memory of Ivanovic, two days after a memorial service in that church was held on the anniversary of his death. That gathering was attended by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and other state officials among others.

Ivanovic was gunned down in front of his party offices in the divided city of Kosovska Mitrovica on January 16, 2018. Both the Serbian and Kosovo authorities have launched investigations, blaming each other for his murder and an alleged cover-up.

The organizers of the protest decided not to allow any speeches out of respect for Ivanovic, choosing instead to play recordings of his interviews, including one in which he said: “They have done everything they could to me, the only thing they haven’t done is shoot me, but who knows, that can’t be excluded”.

The crowd included Ivanovic’s brother Miroslav and opposition Alliance for Serbia leaders Zoran Lutovac (Democratic Party leader), Nebojsa Zelenovic (Together for Serbia leader and Mayor of the city of Sabac), Borko Stefanovic (Party of Freedom and Justice) and Nikola Jovanovic (People’s Party).

The US ambassador to Serbia Antony Godfrey visited Sabac in Western Serbia, the only opposition-held town in the country, saying he was impressed with what the local leaders did in attracting direct foreign investments, the Beta news agency reported on Friday.

The Town Hall’s statement cited Godfrey as saying he was happy to see that different opinions could be heard in Sabac.

“I believe that a healthy debate is an essential part of an active democratic society and I’m convinced this town has a bright future.”

The town’s mayor Nebojsa Zelenovic, an opposition leader and a member of the Alliance for Serbia (SzS) which said it would boycott next spring elections, told the ambassador Sabac could be an example as an open town in which it is possible to think, speak and work freely. He added he would like the whole of Serbia to follow the example.

"We are a free, open and friendly town which wants good relations with everyone. We want to see Sabac and Serbia in the European Union and a part of the Western civilization," Zelenovic said.

He added Sabac had always been proud of the friendship with the US embassy.

Zelenovic said the local authorities informed the guests on Friday about “why we have received awards as the best town for domestic and foreign investments, for being an open town with fast and efficient administration."

Godfrey said that "the US highly appreciated the partnership with Serbia in the fight against the Fascist tyranny in the WWII, as well as our current partnership which has a huge potential for the future, and I hope it will develop further."

Godfrey tweeted a couple of photos and greetings from Sabac in Serbian.

Sabac Mayor Nebojsa Zelenovic said today that he was “followed and heard” for two years, 2017 and 2018 and that he came into possession of documents with orders for that.

Zelenovic, during his appearance on TV N1, claimed that he was “under measures” for the whole of 2017 and 2018, and accused the president of Serbia, Alexander, of “misusing the institutions” of the Security Information Agency (BIA) and the prosecution. Vucic.

“During all this monitoring, they have managed to pull off a process that is being charged to me as mayor, that the budget of the town of Sabac was paid to a utility company for the removal of garbage in a couple of Sabac villages, and that's all … The more important thing is that you see here how many people are under pressure from the system to do things illegally, “Zelenovic said.

He said that he was waiting for his lawyer's team to “finish the whole job”, after which he would go out in public, and he added that he had been monitored for being presented as the head of an organized crime group.

Talking about the process of misuse of the budget by the Republican authority against him and the municipalities, Zelenovic said that in 2016 the State Audit Institution found that there were discrepancies in the spending of the budget, but that they did not significantly affect the city's operations and did not exist.

“Instead of being a misdemeanor liability in any ordinary proceeding, due to accounting mismatches, I have been tried for three years. We are now in the Court of Appeal in Novi Sad. I believe that no court now can decide. to condemn me for something I didn't do, “Zelenovic said.

President of Together for Serbia (ZzS) Nebojsa Zelenovic stated that Vucic “did not dare go to Montenegro,” because he has been exposed and because his plan to collect cheap political points, in collaboration with Djukanovic, at the detriment of the freedom of religion of Orthodox Christian believes, members of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC).

“It is clear to everyone that the law on so-called freedom of religion in Montenegro was adopted with support from the regime in Belgrade. So, Vucic agreed to the seizure of SPC property. Only following the adoption of this anti-civilization law did Vucic start shedding crocodile tears in an attempt to conceal from the public that it was all done in an obvious agreement with Djukanovic,” Zelenovic said in a written statement.

“Vucic and Djukanovic are two sides of a single policy because which is only one goal: uncontrolled personal power. I call on all sides for peace and restraint, and the authorities in Montenegro to immediately revoke the disputed law and for all open issues to be resolved in a dialogue with the SPC,” Zelenovic said.

He called on the president of Serbia “to stop the media pyromania games that can cause untold consequences.”

“I hope that the lesson he was given by the SPC and the people in Montenegro will be enough for him. His presence there is not desired,” Zelenovic concluded.
